In 1958, Gio Ponti was commissioned to design the hall for the Time & Life Building at 1271 Avenue of the Americas in New York. The building housed the headquarters of Time Inc., publisher of influential historical magazines such as Time, Life, Fortune, People, and Sports Illustrated. This was Ponti's most prestigious project in New York. Designed primarily as a meeting table for ten, the D.859.1 table stands out from the auditorium not only for its impressive dimensions - over 3.60 meters in length - but for its particularly simple yet sophisticated design. The legs are characterized by their modern modernity, creating a trapezoidal single-span bridge on which a large tapered top conveys the idea of aerodynamics. It was originally made from solid ash with bronze rims, but is now also available in black painted ash. In addition to the original dimensions, the D.859.1 is available in two smaller versions that faithfully reproduce the harmony and proportions of the original design. Structure Made of solid ash (Fraxinus excelsior), varied according to product specification. Top Composite support made of spruce slats (Picea abies) with external parts of high density fiber panels covered with sliced ash veneer, dyed according to product specification. Legs Satin-finished brass legs and plastic floor support. Structure and top in solid Ash natural or black painted. Legs Satin brass.
